Using rails to transit cargo is a reliable alternative to sea freight, with its vast network being largely interlinked with dependable scheduling between railway depots, and cargo with a journey of over 12000km is able to reach its destination within 16-18 days, as opposed to the typical 30-45 days taken for a ship to complete the same journey, as a much more suitable alternative for time sensitive cargo. Rail connects most of Eurasia, allowing easy transit from the furthest reaches of China all the way to Scotland and Spain. Important to note, shipping remains necessary when trying to import or export goods to and from Ireland, the Americas, Australasia and across Africa.

Rail serves as a much more environmentally friendly alternative for transiting goods, with freight trains producing much lower carbon emissions, some of which produce none due to being powered by electricity as opposed to fuel.

The Xi’an – London Rail Route

One notable rail route is the Xi’an to London rail route, which some call the modern silk road, is an amazing example of transiting freight by rail.

During this journey, cargo moves across 2 continents with 9 stops between Xi’an and London. A typical journey follows this route

It begins at Xi’an Guoijigang station and moves north west
It crosses the Kazakh border at Alashankou and Dostyk
In Kazakhstan, it moves west to Almaty, its next stop.
It then continues along the Trans-Siberian freight corridor into Yekaterinburg Russia.
From here it moves to Moscow, a main distribution centre.
From Moscow it continues west into Brest in Belarus.
It crosses into EU territory in Malaszewicze Poland.
Its next stop is Duisberg Germany a major rail hub and largest inland port in Europe.
With a brief stop in Antwerp Belgium, it moves to France stopping at Lille.
From Lille, it goes through the channel tunnel into England finally arriving at London.
