Typhoon Bavi strikes in the East
In early July, the Typhoon Bavi struck regions across East Asia, hitting areas across China, Philippines and Taiwan. The typhoon made landfall on the eastern coast of China on 11th July.
This typhoon has halted many major, central Chinese ports, with Shanghai, Ningbo and Taiwan’s ports being forced to suspend operations. Any vessels in these ports have been told to prepare evacuations. This has produced significant delays in these ports with initial delays of 3-7 days to be expected. Experts advice shippers to reroute shipments through the port of Shenzhen, which remains in operation.
What does this mean for Far East shipping?
As already mentioned, an initial delay of 3-7 days is expected but there may be a long term impact.
Port congestion is expected, and may result in blank sailings as shipping companies attempt to maintain their schedules. Expect delays in arrival and limited availability for space on vessels. With these delays, costs may rise, especially if rerouting becomes necessary.
During this time, it is essential to plan ahead to ensure minimal delays and costs incurred. As typhoon season continues in the Pacific, the threat of delays remains imminent. Contact your Freight Forwarders today, who can support the planning process.
